Transforming prescription processing and medication management for a 9,000-patient GP surgery

The Problem

PCD was approached by a GP surgery serving approximately 9,000 patients. The practice reported that a significant amount of GP time was being spent processing prescriptions and managing medication related queries. Combined with their broader clinical responsibilities, this high workload led to delays in addressing prescription issues. Many prescriptions were being completed close to or beyond the 48-hour turnaround target, resulting in patient dissatisfaction and reduced access to essential medications.

PCD’s Solution

After carrying out a detailed review of the existing process and identifying the practice’s needs, PCD recommended dedicated support from an experienced pharmacist prescriber. The practice commissioned 5 × 3.5-hour sessions per week. With PCD’s guidance, PCD introduced a robust service model and worked closely with the surgery team to seamlessly integrate the pharmacist into the practice team.

6 Month Review

Six months into the project, the service had a clear and measurable impact on reducing GP workload. The pharmacist provided training and support to administrative staff, ensuring effective triage and workflow management.
This enabled GPs to focus on more complex patients with multiple co-morbidities, while the pharmacist delivered an efficient and reliable medicines-management service.

Conclusion

Evaluation showed that GPs regained approximately 14 hours of clinical time each week. Patient satisfaction surveys demonstrated improved access to medication and strengthened relationships with local community pharmacies.
